Purpose
The University of Toronto Art Centre student Awards were initially established through the generosity of three donors: Joy Alexander, Judith McErvel and Margaret McKelvey. They were later augmented through the further generosity of Wendy Rebanks and the W. Garfield Weston Foundation. From the beginning, the Awards were intended to recognize and assist students who would like to be involved with the University of Toronto Art Centre in a significant way.
Eligibility
The UTAC Student Awards are Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Funds (OSOTF) Awards, which means that financial need and Ontario residency are the primary award conditions.
Financial Need
Students must demonstrate financial need in one of the following two ways:
1. By receiving assistance from the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP), or
2. By demonstrating elgibility to receive OSAP funding
Citizenship status
To be eligible, students must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents
Ontario Residency
To be eligible, students must satisfy one of the following criteria:
1. the student has always resided in Ontario, or
2. Ontario is the last province that the student has resided in for 12 consecutive months without being a full-time post-secondary student
3. also, a student who is considered married for OSAP purposes can be considered an Ontario resident if the student’s partner has resided in Ontario for at least 12 consecutive months immediately before the last day of the month in which classes began for the student’s most recent period of full-time post-secondary studies and during this time, the student’s partner was not enrolled in full-time post secondary studies
4. further, a single dependent student can be considered an Ontario resident if the student’s parent(s), step-parent(s), legal guardian(s), or official sponsor(s) has resided in Ontario for at least 12 consecutive months immediately before the last day of the month in which classes began for the student’s most recent period of full-time post secondary studies.
Other
The awards are open to both graduate and undergraduate students.
Preference will be given to students who have an affiliation with University College.
Amounts
The amount available for the awards varies each year, depending on the income generated by the endowment and the number of potential recipients. It is anticipated that awards to each student will be a minimum of $400.
Categories
Award recipients fall into the following two categories:
a) students involved in the art lounge Student Exhibition program, and
b) students performing a UTAC internship, tied to an academic course
Process
UTAC staff adjudicate the awards each year based on the criteria of excellence, need, community service and ability to meet the eligibility requirements outlined above.
If the excellence, need and eligibility criteria are not met in a given year, no awards will be made. The money will be reserved for distribution the following year.
